Boston firefighters have been battling a smoky, electrical transformer fire in a utility building in Boston's Back Bay, that led to a huge power outage in the downtown area.

Officials will hold off on probing what caused a 100-ton transformer to explode in the middle of Back Bay yesterday, rattling nearby hotels and forcing hundreds to pour into the streets, until they restore power to thousands using an army of workers, miles of cables and 50-plus generators. Calling this blackout a “catastrophic event,” a local utility vice president of operations, said he wouldn’t theorize on what sparked the three-alarm blaze until investigators could dig into the burnt-out Scotia Street substation, where workers today cleaned the remaining 115,000-volt transformer and prepped to replace the destroyed one in a multi-million-dollar substitution. click here to read full article
